Touring in a sports car: the BMW 850ci
Genesis
The BMW 850ci was initially the 850i which released in 1990 and revolutionized the meaning of touring in a sports car. It was one of the first models by BMW in a general class sports car to have a 300 hp engine. It came with either a 4 speed automatic or a 6 speed manual transmission that bought its ticket to the elite class. It was well received all over the world as a standard edition sports car and it went on to become one of the most popular sports car of its era with features in motion pictures and on television. Although it didn’t reach a uniqueness in its design and specification that could set it apart, it was the performance that stole the show for the 850i before it became a standard edition 2 door coupe that resulted in the addition of the “C” making it the 850Ci.
Design and specifications
The BMW 850ci was the first of its long line of successors to sport the 5 liter M70 V12 engine that could deliver a whooping 300 hp easily. In 1993, a second series, sporting the same name but a different engine, rolled off alongside the original model. The engine in the second series was a M73 V12 engine with a better compression ratio owing to the 5.4 liter fuel capacity and could deliver a total of 322 hp cleanly. The design was a two door sedan with turn up headlights in the more recent models which were after 1994. The sedan class didn’t match exactly, so the coupe categorization was needed.
Performance
The 8 series was meant to be a sports class series with exotic sports cars and with impressive driving performance. BMW cars have a tendency to have a sharp handling factor in order to provide better control at high speeds, but takes time to get used to the overly fluid turning. The 850Ci is the perfect sports car for touring as it offers a reasonable mileage other than the features of comfort and style. The flip up headlights make a unique accessory and provides a good aerodynamic support especially during downhill driving. The car’s performance is recommendable for cross country excursions as well as for situations that demand a fairly high speed. In 1994, it was an object of wonder to obtain such a speed.
Overview
The BMW 850ci was a machine that delivered performance and had the nerve to compete with all other standard issue sport cars and might just have given them a run for their money. It involves a good transmission system as well as suspension, the drive train is an FR style one (front engine rear wheel drive) and the car’s body gives it an overall stability. There are several reasons none of which can actually speculate why the popularity of the 8 series grew, but it is prudent to acknowledge that it is one of the predecessors to the speed demons that are seen on the road these days.
